Once Upon A Time…

As a child, fairytales seemed possible. They gave us an outlet for imagination and hope for the future. As we get older and more mature, we realize fairytales do not tell us the whole truth. They never prepared us for the harsh realities that exist in everyday life. The realities of mental illnesses and trauma that many may endure were never introduced to us as a possibility to our future. Consequently, finding the magical moments in life begin to feel impossible. You start to wonder, where is my happily ever after? Where is my fairy godmother to make this go away?

According to the World Health Organization, it is estimated 450 million people live with mental illness around the world. The National Institute of Mental Health, states that nearly 1 in 5 U.S. Adults live with mental illness. Most signs and indicators of mental illness go unnoticed to those who do not suffer from them. Unfortunately, people who suffer from these illnesses find it difficult and very frustrating to describe what they are experiencing in a way that other people can understand.

This work depicts the different mental issues and feelings that I experience every day. Although the triggers may ebb and flow, I contend with them every day. My goal is that those who suffer in silence, will be able to relate to this work and know they are not alone. My hope is that this work will call upon those who do not suffer from mental illness to educate themselves on the signs and indicators in order to understand what those who suffer are going through.
